About this car
A 1957 220S Ponton Cabriolet at Gullwing Motor Cars in Astoria, New York, priced at $34,500. The seller describes a highly original car, green with tan leather, out of long-term ownership and storage and in need of complete restoration. Hand-built Ponton cabriolets are rare and expensive to restore properly; the value here is the originality, so document everything before any work begins.
What the photos show
- Heavy rust has eaten the sills and rockers on both sides and holed the lower front fenders, so major structural metalwork money is unavoidable.
- Green paint is dull, scratched and peeling in places, so a full repaint is part of any restoration budget here.
- The rear bumper is rusted through at the corners and the front chrome is dull, so re-chroming or replacement money is needed.
- The beige soft top is dirty, sagging and frayed at the edges with a cloudy rear window, so a complete new top is a certain cost.
- The tan seats are dirty and worn but not badly torn, so they may clean up, which is one of the few areas that might not need full retrim money.
- The dash wood veneer is peeling and mottled across the whole face, the carpets are filthy and the driver's sill is rusted, so a full interior restoration is needed.
- The engine bay is corroded almost everywhere, with rust across the radiator support, air intake and fittings, so a full mechanical recommissioning budget is required.
- Can't judge the underside from below — it is not shown in the photos, but the rotted sills visible from the side say that inspection will not bring good news or save money.
Money: At $34,500 this is a complete restoration project — rotted sills, holed fenders, a dead top, a peeling dash and a corroded bay — so the price is buying rarity, and the restoration will cost multiples of the ask.
