About this car
This is a final-year W128 Ponton cabriolet, one of just 1,182 built from 1958 to 1960, with its original engine, a copy of the factory data card, and one owner for over two decades, who bought it from Mercedes specialist Alex Dearborn. The honest caveat is in the dealer's own text: the car was built in ivory over red leather and wears Medium Red over cognac today, so the price is for a beautiful restored car to drive, not for a car in its original colors. The four-speed column-shift manual is the enthusiast's specification.
What the photos show
- Deep red paint is glossy and even from every angle, no paintwork to budget.
- Chrome grille, bumpers and hubcaps are bright and straight, nothing to replate.
- Tan leather seats front and rear look fresh and unmarked, no retrim needed.
- The burl wood dash has a deep shine and the gauges are crisp, no wood refinishing bill.
- The tan soft top fits taut raised or folded under its boot, no top replacement needed.
- Trunk is clean with a proper whitewall spare in place, nothing missing to hunt down.
- The engine is only seen from a distance with the hood up, so I can't judge the bay's detail, and there is no underside view either.
Money: at $119,800 the cosmetics in these photos are fully done and support the price; what remains is proving the mechanical side the gallery doesn't show up close.
