About this car
This final-year Ponton coupe is one of 830 built. It has the rare Hydrak clutchless gearbox, a factory sliding steel sunroof, and fitted luggage. It was restored in the 1990s while owned by Mercedes collector Dr. Philip Lufty of Phoenix, Arizona, and it has recently been serviced by a specialist. It is a new arrival with no published price, and Copley shows the mileage as '825*' with no explanation on the page, so the first call asks two questions: the price, and what the asterisk means. It was built in blue over grey and is now red over cognac. Like the cabriolet from the same dealer, it will be priced on condition and rarity rather than original colors.
What the photos show
- deep burgundy paint is mirror-glossy from every angle, show-level finish, no paint money left to spend
- chrome bumpers, grille and hubcaps are bright and straight, no re-chrome bill
- cream leather seats front and rear look flawless with burgundy piping, no need to reupholster
- dash wood is deep-gloss and perfect and the ivory wheel is unmarked, no interior money needed
- fitted luggage sits in a clean trunk, a plus that usually costs extra to source
- the hood is shown open from a distance only, so the engine bay can't be judged in detail
- no underside photo is in the sampled set, so the underside can't be judged
- three of the sixteen sampled photos would not load, so a slice of the gallery can't be judged
- one gallery photo pairs this coupe with a matching burgundy cabriolet that is not this car, do not price the pair by mistake
Money: no price is listed, and the photos show a show-finished Ponton coupe that needs nothing cosmetic, so the money question is purely the unphotographed underside and engine bay detail, get both before paying show money.
