About this car
Mercedes Heritage publishes no asking price for this car, so there is nothing to set against the 280SE 4.5 average ask of about $22,900 — what carries the value here is originality: a W108 4.5 sold new in Walnut Creek in February 1973 and kept by the same owner for 51 years, in Pine Green over green MB Tex, with the factory data card and a complete set of handbooks. The specification is the desirable one — the 4.5-litre M117 V8, a factory sunroof and the column-shift automatic — and the engine number is published in the ad (117984-12-021004), so matching numbers can be checked against the data card. The ad states no mileage, which is the first question to ask. On any W108 the money goes on floors, sills and trunk rust, kingpin wear, the rear compensating spring, and the D-Jetronic injection behaving from cold; a preserved, unmolested car should answer most of that well, but 'brilliant preservation' still has to be verified in person and underneath.
What the photos show
- The gallery runs to 195 photos, but every one sampled across it — walk-arounds and close details from the first frame to the last — is an exterior shot, so this is a paint, chrome and panel judgement, not a full condition report.
- The Pine Green paint is deep, glossy and even on every panel, the reflections run unbroken down both flanks, and the panel gaps are straight and tight — no paint or body budget shows anywhere in these photos.
- Chrome is the strongest tell for the preservation claim: bumpers, grille, window frames, lamp rims and the trunk star are mirror-bright in the close-ups, with no pitting or bubbling visible — no re-chrome money here.
- The stacked US headlights, indicators and tail-lamp lenses are clear, bright and uncracked, and the fit of the trunk lid and nose panels is tidy — consistent with a car that has been kept rather than restored.
- The Bundt alloy wheels are clean and unkerbed, the Michelin Defender tires show deep tread, and the one wheel-arch close-up shows tidy textured underseal — no wheel or tire spend from the photos.
- Through the glass the green MB Tex seats look smooth and uncreased and the dash pad looks intact — but there is no true interior photo in the set sampled, so seat wear, carpets, wood and headliner can't be judged properly.
- No engine bay, trunk or underside photos appear in the gallery as published — the M117, the floors and sills, and the rear compensating spring all stay unjudged until the dealer supplies more (the ad itself says 'more to come') or the car is seen in person.
Money: Mercedes Heritage publishes no price, so there is nothing to set against the 280SE 4.5 average ask of about $22,900; the value case rests on 51 years with one owner, the factory data card and handbooks, and paint and chrome that photograph this well — but the ad states no mileage and the gallery shows no engine, trunk or underside, so the money questions stay open until those are supplied.
